Shipping to Australia from NZ — How It Works

A practical guide to getting your belongings across the Tasman. Sea freight, air freight, customs, biosecurity, and what movers actually do — explained for Kiwis.

How Shipping from NZ to Australia Works

Moving your belongings from New Zealand to Australia follows a standard process, whether you're shipping a few boxes or an entire household. Here's what happens step by step:

  1. Get quotes — Request quotes from 2–3 international movers. Use our free comparison tool to get matched with verified trans-Tasman movers.
  2. Pre-move survey — Your chosen mover inspects your home (in person or via video call) to assess volume and provide a final price.
  3. Packing — Professional packers wrap and box everything, or you can pack yourself to save money. Movers supply specialist materials for fragile items.
  4. Pickup & loading — Your goods are collected from your NZ address and loaded into a shipping container at the nearest port (Auckland, Tauranga, Christchurch, or Wellington).
  5. Sea transit — The container sails to an Australian port (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, or Adelaide). Transit takes 5–10 days depending on the route.
  6. Australian customs & quarantine — Your shipment is cleared through Australian Border Force and biosecurity inspection. Your mover handles all paperwork.
  7. Delivery — Goods are trucked from the port to your new Australian address and unpacked if you've chosen a full-service package.

The entire process takes 3–6 weeks from pickup in NZ to delivery in Australia.

Sea Freight vs Air Freight

Most NZ-to-Australia moves use sea freight because it's significantly cheaper. But air freight has its place for urgent or small shipments.

Pro tip: Many movers offer a "fast-track essentials" air freight service alongside your sea freight shipment. Ship your main belongings by sea and send a box of essentials (clothes, toiletries, devices) by air so it arrives before you do.

Full Container vs Shared Container (Groupage)

When shipping by sea, you'll choose between a full container and a shared container:

Full Container Load (FCL)

  • You rent an entire 20ft or 40ft container
  • 20ft container: fits a 2–3 bedroom house (~30m³) — costs $6,000–$10,000 NZD
  • 40ft container: fits a 4+ bedroom house (~60m³) — costs $9,000–$15,000 NZD
  • Ships on your schedule — no waiting for other cargo
  • Lower risk of damage (your items aren't handled again until delivery)
  • Best for: families, large households, anyone with furniture

Shared Container / Groupage

  • Your items share space in a container with other customers
  • You pay per cubic metre: $150–$350/m³
  • Can save 30–40% compared to a full container
  • Takes longer — the container sails once it's full (1–3 week delay possible)
  • Slightly higher damage risk from extra handling
  • Best for: singles, couples, box-only moves, 1-bedroom loads

Australian Customs & Biosecurity

Australia has some of the strictest biosecurity laws in the world. Here's what to expect:

  • Customs declaration — You must complete an Unaccompanied Personal Effects Statement (Form B534). Your mover provides this and helps you fill it out.
  • Duty-free entry — Personal and household goods you've owned and used for 12+ months enter Australia duty-free. New items may attract GST (10%).
  • Biosecurity inspection — All shipments are screened. Items with soil, plant matter, or organic residue may be inspected, cleaned, or fumigated at your cost.
  • Wooden items — Untreated timber furniture may require heat treatment or fumigation. Garden tools must be cleaned of all soil.
  • Quarantine fees — If your shipment is flagged for inspection, fees range from $100–$600. Declare everything honestly to avoid fines up to $6,660 or criminal prosecution.

What You Can't Ship to Australia

Prohibited items — these will be seized and destroyed:

  • Fresh or dried food (meat, dairy, fruit, vegetables, honey, nuts)
  • Plants, seeds, bulbs, soil, or potting mix
  • Animal products (feathers, shells, bones, skins unless treated)
  • Untreated wooden items (firewood, bamboo, straw)
  • Drugs and drug paraphernalia
  • Firearms and weapons (require separate import permits)

Items needing treatment or declaration: wooden furniture, sporting equipment (golf clubs, fishing gear, camping gear must be clean), bicycles, garden tools, surfboards.

Transit Insurance

Most reputable movers include basic liability coverage, but it's usually limited to around $50/kg. For full protection:

  • Comprehensive transit insurance covers loss, damage, and theft during the entire journey. Typically costs 2–4% of the declared value of your goods.
  • What it covers: breakage, water damage, theft, total loss (e.g. container falls overboard).
  • What it doesn't cover: pre-existing damage, items you packed yourself (unless inspected), perishables, items seized by customs.
  • Tip: Take photos and video of all items before packing. This is your proof if you need to make a claim.

8 Tips to Save on Shipping from NZ to Australia

  1. Get at least 3 quotesUse our free tool to make movers compete for your business. Prices vary hugely.
  2. Ship less stuff — Every cubic metre costs $150–$350. Sell furniture on Trade Me and buy new in Australia if it's cheaper than shipping.
  3. Pack yourself — Ask for a "pack yourself" rate. Most movers discount 10–20% if you do your own packing.
  4. Use groupage for small loads — If you're shipping under 10m³, a shared container saves 30–40% over a full container.
  5. Move off-peak — November to February is peak season. Ship in April–September for lower rates and faster service.
  6. Consolidate — Combine air and sea freight through the same company for a bundled rate.
  7. Avoid storage fees — Have your Australian address locked in before your shipment arrives. Port storage charges $50–$150/week.
  8. Check insurance carefully — Don't over-insure, but don't under-insure either. 2–3% of total value is standard.
